I’ve come to a realization about careers, jobs, work, and a life spent trying to earn money. I have spent the last two years revisiting my career path and the person that I am and have come to the conclusion that I have been at my most successful when I have been driven by my work! That is to say when my work drove me – when work is the transitive verb and me is the direct object. When my work, and the business I was working on, came first, the money and opportunities always seemed to flow my way. As a result, I spent money with intense gratitude and even more abundance came as a result. I made money because money was a function of my hard work.
On the other side of the coin, lately, when making money is primary and my work is secondary, everything is untenable. I have been at my least successful when I have been driven by money. That is to say when money drove me – when money is the transitive verb and me is the direct object – life is tough! I don’t have opportunities and I don’t spend money with gratitude and less comes as a result. It’s the latest in quantum theory: objects behave differently under observation. I made more work because work was a function of my exclusive focus on money.
To be clear when I say HARD WORK, I don’t mean ‘the grind’ or a menial job that you hate. When I say WORK I define it as something even more than a career, but something that defines you and you would do despite a paycheck. It’s more like a lifestyle, something you are enthusiastic and something that gives back to you mentally, emotionally, and spiritually for doing it – it’s rewarding! All things being even (ceterus paribus), what would you do with your life if money wasn’t an issue? What is your LEGACY to society?
This type of HARD WORK has a quantum effect on ourselves.
Now let’s be clear, I don’t think even a fraction of the population have the foresight, insight, or motivation to pursue one’s ‘dreams’ to the extent that it meets their earning potential; however, when it does, hard work isn’t actually that hard at all. The point is that this path that I am talking about takes courage because it takes an iron will and often the denial of expectations that are placed against us by people and institutions around us in society. For example, if you have a good job that pays well yet does not inspire you and your real dream is to start a foundation in the other side of the country or overseas, how do you go about making that a reality? If that foundation is, in your heart of hearts, your LEGACY, how many of us would have the guts to actually try and make that a reality versus it languishing forever as an unfulfilled dream?
Hard work = work that is focused, intense, enthralling, captivating, energizing, in-flow, grateful, creative, in-momentum, visualized, etc. Creating something! It is a legacy, it is a lifestyle.
To have a successful business you need the following formula. Success = peoples’ need for what you do > your need to do it. Alternately: success = peoples’ value for what you do > you value for it.
Money is a function of hard work! You can say that money is a by-product of hard work! Money is the dependent variable and work is the independent variable, mathematically speaking. That is to say, the money you earn is dependent on the work that you do. This may seem quite obvious; however, for many the choice of work and career are driven by money and the acquisition of things which would make work a function of money.
Graph of the function: f(x) = x3
Money (m) runs along the y-axis; work (w) runs along the x-axis.
Money is a function of hard work: f(m) = w3
In conclusion, you don’t have to chase that almighty dollar! Pursue the career that will fulfill you as a person, a career that will be rewarding and give back to you physically, spiritually, mentally, emotionally, financially. When your HARD WORK doesn’t seem like WORK at all, then you know you’ve found that career path where money is a function of hard work because abundance and opportunity will flow unimpeded toward you. You will be in such a state of flow that money will come to you and you will spend it without reservation as a reward for your hard work! It will all seem natural. You will look with pride on what you have build or accomplished with genuine self-satisfaction that your monetary reward will honestly pale in comparison to the goals you accomplished and will become a natural by-product to your way of life. This type of spending with gratitude will increase in magnitude as your level of accomplishment rises along the parabola of the work and money function f(m) = w3.
