Ever wonder where the line is between Thinking versus daydreaming? Well I’m going to show you exactly where it is. I have 3 signs to know the difference between thinking versus daydreaming. First of all, let me just preface this article by saying that when you are daydreaming your mind is NOT in gear. Think about it (no pun intended), you can drive while thinking, not while daydreaming. Why? What’s the difference? Follow me…
1. You’re Fantasizing.
Basically, when your daydreaming you’re fantasizing, or escaping reality. You are not in your current reality but a projected, cooler reality where you can have and do anything you want. You may be walking by a really opulent house and fantasize about owning it; however, that is only a fantasy, the law of attraction will not give you that house. You will understand why after you read all three indicators of daydreaming.
The root of the term fantasizing is ‘fantasy.’ You can even say ‘fantastic,’ which is what things appear to be in a fantasy. When you are fantasizing your mind is not in gear, it is in neutral, reality is skewed in your favor but not in real reality, not in the real world. Your thoughts in this state are like a mist of water evaporating into the air and not being channeled properly to a source. When you are thinking, your thoughts are being channeled toward a source.
2. You’re playing Evel Knievel.
If anyone remembers Evel Knievel, he was a daredevil stuntman who performed numerous life-cheating stunts from the 1960s to the 1980s. What made him amazing and a legend was that he jumped distances on his motorcycle that were thought way to far to be survivable. He proved everyone wrong.
When you’re daydreaming you are making leaps of the imagination that are too far to be bridged by reality. When you are walking by that opulent house fantasizing about owning it, it is too far a stretch for reality. You will not be magically transported into that house without thought, or force of intellect. The “universe” is not going to give it to you. Your thought process for achieving your goals should be like stepping stones in a garden, small steps, maybe leaps, one at a time in a measured distance and order. To walk by that house and fantasize about living in it is like attempting to jump over the Grand Canyon blind – not going to happen!
Listen, I just stated earlier that Evel Knievel “proved everyone wrong.” However, that is not the same as saying that you can too! Evel Knievel worked very hard at what he did, those successes didn’t just fall into his lap, his jumping the Grand Canyon came because he laid out stepping stones in the garden of his mind, along his success path, that got him there. He conquered the Grand Canyon as the culmination of his career which started out as very small jumps which he eventually parlayed into successively larger and more dangerous jumps. He certainly didn’t do it simply by fantasizing about the other side, that would be fatal! You can achieve anything you want, if you think it through.
3. Drifting Away From Reality.
One of the most revealing experiences I’ve had was doing man-overboard drills. When I used to sail a lot we constantly did safety drills to keep our skill levels at a premium. One of those were man-overboard drills where a person would play the person who fell overboard, literally throwing themselves into the water, and the rest of the crew would leap into action and man the boat to save him or her. The first time I did this was in calm water and the interesting part was my perception of where the boat was sitting on the water in relationship to the person in the water; the assumption being that in calm water the boat would not drift that far away. Boy was I wrong on my first man-overboard drill! Within minutes the boat had drifted off about a quarter mile! It’s nearly impossible to see a head bobbing up out of the water at that distance, even less in rough weather not to mention at night.
The point is that when you are daydreaming you are like the person in the water with no bearing floating away from the boat of reality. Slowly, over time, you will be drifting away at an imperceptible rate losing your mental prowess and faculties. If daydreaming is easier than thinking for you, you need to correct this by engaging in mental strengthening exercises. Start by reading.
When you are THINKING, you are applying the powers of reason. You are engaging your intellect. Your mind is in gear and engaged. Your water is flowing in a measured direction and not dissipating into the air. When you are thinking you are also focusing and problem-solving. Not to say that you have to solve all the problems of the world or be in mad-scientist mode, just focus your mind!
If your ceiling fan breaks and you have to replace it, fantasizing about the newest and most beautiful fan is not going to get the job done. The “universe” is not going to mail you a fan and install it for you. Grandpa isn’t going to come round, fan in tow, and magically climb up a ladder and wire it up. THINK about what fan options there are, go out and get one, read the directions, and install it. If you run into problems along the way, THINK about it, REASON what is the problem, use LOGIC and send that THOUGHT toward your solution. Get your hands dirty!
There is a distinct difference between VISUALIZING while thinking versus what you visualize while fantasizing, but more on that in a future article. For now, enjoy this video.
