Western Europe has some of the most iconic national flags, and therefore flag maps. Their representative countries are instantly recognizable as they have been some of the world’s most influential in terms of politics, economics, and sports. Western Europe has changed dramatically over time from its first occupation over 300,000 years ago to some of the first technology producers in Europe to invaders and conquerors after the fall of the Roman Empire. Our modern global society is replete with connections and contributions from ancient Western Europe.

This 4th and final in the series of the FLAG MAPS of Europe will be focusing on Western Europe. To be fair, much of what we think of as high (haute) European culture such as art, food, and architecture originally came from Southern Europe. The Greeks and Italians specifically. That notwithstanding, like any great civilization, countries like Germany, France, and England took those initial ideas and dramatically improved on them creating masterful leaps forward in technology and art. All of the countries of Western Europe in this collection include (in alphabetical order):

  • 🇦🇹 Austria
  • 🇧🇪 Belgium
  • 🇫🇷 France
  • 🇩🇪 Germany
  • 🇮🇪 Ireland
  • 🇱🇮 Liechtenstein
  • 🇱🇺 Luxembourg
  • 🇳🇱 Netherlands
  • 🇨🇭 Switzerland
  • 🇬🇧 United Kingdom

In addition to these giants, I would include the following additional list of countries as ideological alternatives, either in terms of political associations outside of their respective region or those who have their own aspirations of independence. First on this list I would include the country of Monaco who is politically associated with France yet whose culture and location is definitely Mediterranean. For purely political reasons I would include the kingdoms of Scotland and Wales (Cymru) as needing separate representations in the flag maps of Western Europe.

  • 🇲🇨 Monaco
  • 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Scotland
  • 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Wales
