One of the most sacred, awe-inspiring sites I’ve ever been to has to be Manassas National Battlefield Park, Virginia. Otherwise known as Bull Run, this national park features 7 square miles of nature, trails, Civil War structures, statues, cannons, and more, not to mention a neat air-conditioned Visitor Center with a mini museum and bookstore.
When I stayed in Manassas I purposely booked my lodgings right at the entrance to this historic location just so I could be next to it and be able to visit more than once. I’m sure glad I did because there was more than one day in the heat to accomplish over there than was feasible! Having that visitor center A/C’d is a blessing, let me tell you. The trick I found was to go early, and that’s when I snapped some of my best photos of the Manassas National Battlefield Park.
To make the experience even more poignant was that I was there with my beloved cousin, who also happens to be my genealogical mentor, and who is equally as much of a Civil War buff as I am. To share these hallowed grounds with a person that appreciates it as much as you do is amazing, to share it with family is priceless; for this park is truly humbling on the spirit. Just being able to walk the grounds where the troops fought, touch the old cannon, weave in and out of the old buildings, gave me goosebumps as if I was standing among my ancestors.
You can visit the official Manassas National Battlefield Park website and find out more about the grounds, hours of operation and location. Check out more of my Virginia adventure beginning with my “READING VIRGINIA” post!
The beauty of the Manassas National Battlefield Park, aka Bull Run, is simply not to be believed.
