Come take a tour of the University of Alabama Campus Quad with 65 photos I took while there! The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa is a campus that is not only renown for its athletics, but also its old-world, colonial architecture. The oldest and most beautiful buildings were constructed of red brick in the Gothic Revival style, these structures and their beauty still dominate the area surrounding the present-day University of Alabama Campus Quad right in the heart of campus.

The photos I took were from my December 2018 visit to the University of Alabama where I stayed in the legendary Capstone Hotel. What an amazing spot to have stayed in. As a Crimson Tide fan, it was its own unique experience full of history and dare I say a lot of ogling.

The main purpose of my visit to Tuscaloosa, however, was genealogical. My purpose was to conduct family history research up in Walker and Fayette Counties in search of my Alabama ancestors.

A short history of the University of Alabama goes like this: it was founded in 1828 when Tuscaloosa was the capital of the fledgling state, created in 1819. The university’s architect, William Nichols, was inspired by one of the other great universities of its time (and still today), Thomas Jefferson’s University of Virginia. The architectural styles are very much reminiscent – I can confirm that having visited the UVA myself.

In a sad turn of events, the University of Alabama was almost completely razed during the Civil War in which only 4 buildings survived. Today Alabama is home to 17 national football championships and a host of other highly-competitive male and female sports. #RollTide.

This 65 photo campus tour is mainly within the quadrant between Paul Bryant Drive, Colonial Drive, Hackberry Lane, and Second Avenue. I did not want to include the Athletic Complex as images and videos of these areas can be seen all over networks like the SEC Network and ESPN in the multitude of documentaries that have been done on the athletic accomplishments of the University of Alabama. Besides, this is the coolest part of campus to me!
