🍂 U.S. Discovery — $24.99/month This is the plan I currently use, and I’ll say it plainly in this Ancestry review: it is so worth it. You get full access to U.S. census, military, birth, marriage, and death records. The seamless hint system alone — where records surface right inside your tree — makes this worth every penny for American-focused research.
🌍 World Explorer — $39.99/month Everything in U.S. Discovery, plus international records. I’m planning to upgrade to this level soon because I’ve hit the point where I need European records to trace my lineage back to the old country. If your tree has any immigrant ancestors, this is where you’ll want to be.
🏛️ All Access — $59.99/month The Cadillac of Ancestry plans. Full records access, plus Newspapers.com and Fold3 for military research — and you can add up to four family members under the same plan. If you’re a serious researcher or splitting the cost with relatives, this is exceptional value.

Who Should Skip Ancestry (Honest Limitations)
Every fair Ancestry review should include this section. Here’s when Ancestry might not be the right fit:
- Your roots are exclusively non-English speaking and non-Western. Ancestry’s record depth drops significantly for some regions of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. MyHeritage may serve you better for certain European and Middle Eastern collections.
- You only want DNA results. If you’re not interested in records or tree-building, a standalone AncestryDNA kit is still great, but you won’t need a subscription.
- You’re a very casual, one-time researcher. In that case, use the 14-day free trial, do a deep dive, and cancel before it renews. There’s no penalty for that.
- You cancel late. You must cancel at least two business days before your renewal date or you’ll be charged for another term. Set a calendar reminder.
These are real limitations — but in my experience, for the vast majority of American genealogists, this Ancestry review stands firmly positive.

It’s not just a chart — it’s a dynamic, living project that grows with your discoveries. Honestly, no matter what I pay for subscriptions, the tree function is what makes this the best Ancestry review I could ever write — because it’s the feature I love most.
When I say I was new to genealogy years ago, I was literally “new to genealogy!” I was adopted and after finding my birth parents through Ancestry.com, I had to start from scratch as I had nary a shred of family history information to go on. If family history is life, then Ancestry literally saved my life! Being a bit over-the-top there 🎉… but sufficed to say this Ancestry review is legit.

These are the loadstone of genealogy research. BMD records cross-reference your ancestors’ key life events and provide vital context for their experiences. In my Ancestry review, I’d call this the second most important feature after the tree builder.
