When speaking in ‘law of attraction’ terms, the phrase the universe is often bandied about, as in “ask the universe,” or “the universe will deliver anything you desire.” However, what is this mysterious and great UNIVERSE? Is it an inanimate object, some mysteriously incomprehensible operating system, a living entity, or are you the punch line of a joke where some guru is laughing all the way to the bank?

I have to disclaim that many of my early articles here on NOW-Power bought into the idea of the universe as some sort of magical and omnipotent power source that thinks and acts on its own. I thought of it as some sort of replicator system that they used to have on Star Trek: The Next Generation! Just ask and the universe will deliver! Oh, no! It’s not so simple! Don’t fall into the trap I did!

Two years prior to me starting this blog I jumped wholeheartedly into this law of attraction stuff, thrusting everything I had in order to make an honest go of it. I studied and read and even followed along with other blogs, I even paid for some advice from these internet charlatans. I really committed myself to this, discarding negative thoughts, focusing steadily on the positive, and visualizing great things. I really, really, really, dug deep and believed in all this stuff. I was waiting for that bike to magically show up on my doorstep delivered by grandpa!

Guess what happened after two years of doing that? NOTHING! Not a damn thing! Sure, good things came of my positive thoughts and I had a bunch of new, good things happen to me; however, they were the result of work and mechanisms that were already in my life! No new, external sources of income came to me at any point that was not already within my reach. To my scientific mind the only logical conclusion to draw was that I DID IT! Empirical results told me that nothing else was responsible for my increase, ONLY ME AND MY HARD WORK!

truth about the universe law of attraction

This universe fell flat, the law of attraction fell flat! Hey, thinking positive and feeling hippy-good is ok; however, being deceived about reality is not good! Don’t attribute success to something erroneous; know what brought you success and you’ll be even more sure to get more. My hard work brought me success!

The thing that I had to untangle before beginning with all of this law of attraction stuff was my own beliefs I had coming into this game. I grew up Christian and for me God, His son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit were the only things I could/should/would ask on a ‘universal’ level. Well, I rationalized that talking to this epistemological ‘universe’ would be the same as talking to God. The same as praying! Hmmm. Is it the same?

There are certain similarities. You are asking as if you have already received, a kind of faith. You are asking with gratitude, a kind of giving thanks. You are submitting yourself to a power greater than yourself, a kind of humility. You are developing a growing relationship with the universe, a kind of spiritual walk. So, is this the same as prayer?

It’s NOT because the SOURCE is different! You are not specifically asking God, using His name, by name, as you would address your Maker.

Here’s the interesting part. God created the universe! So isn’t talking to the universe the same as talking to God? Many LOA gurus will tell you it is the same, they tend to make that clear; in fact, very non-denominationally clear. While I say it is perfectly ok to choose your own religion, I have come to realize over the past TWO YEARS that it is not ok NOT to acknowledge the source. You must acknowledge the source (GOD) and not simply the messenger (the universe). The law of attraction has removed God from the equation. I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s not ok!

In my conception of the universe, this so-called universe is equivalent to one of the roles of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit can do so many things and is a multi-functional intermediary between humans and our Creator. Praying directly to the Holy Spirit, asking the Holy Spirit for stuff, is about as pointless as asking your plate for food!

truth about the universe law of attraction

The truth about the the universe is that the universe was created by God for His purpose! The universe is still a living thing that is intelligent and was created for us to commune with our God. Let’s be clear, all of these facets and buzz words of the law of attraction including gratitude, intention, manifestation, opportunity, visualization, abundance, etc. are all good things in and of themselves; however, they are just tools. The truth about the universe is that it is also a tool. You don’t pray to a tool. You don’t pray to your plate for food, neither would you pray to your pen to sign a piece of paper. You pray to THE CREATOR of all things, which, quite obviously, includes the plate, the pen, and, the universe. God created the universe and should be acknowledged as the source of all things. When you ask for help, ask God, the Creator of all things.
