The Hermitage is the mansion of Andrew Jackson, acclaimed General and 7th President of the United States. Andrew Jackson’s figure stands as a towering monument to American history that can never be torn down; his home, The Hermitage, is equally illustrious.

At over 1000 acres, The Hermitage is truly a breathtaking place to visit. Nestled in the hills of Tennessee just outside of Nashville, it is spectacular any time of the year. Like many of Jackson’s contemporaries and predecessors, the mansion itself is a show-and-tell of wonders and intellectual endeavors. As you enter the foyer there are objects strewn about to engage any visitor as he or she would wait for the master of the house; these objects were meant to spark conversation and enlighten the host (Andrew Jackson) about his guests based on the questions they would raise.

Thomas Jefferson and James Madison did the exact same thing in their respective homes of Monticello and Montpelier. It was a thing back then.

I visited the Hermitage on December 20th, 2018. It was a cold and damp day in Tennessee. The day prior was nice and sunny, yet still comfortable in the mid 50s despite the weather threatening to turn. Local newscasters had foretold of possible thunder and hail the day I went; however, despite the portents, it was a distinctly beautiful day in my opinion. Dark and wintry, the perfect day to go exploring the grounds of Andrew Jackson’s home without a soul to be seen!

You can visit the official Hermitage website and find out more information about their hours and exact location. There’s also information about the grounds as well as the final resting place of Andrew Jackson in his beautifully-manicured garden.

You can also find out how The Hermitage helped me to unlock a 6 year old family mystery in my article entitled “Andrew Jackson and the Manasco Families of Alabama” right here on the Family History Foundation.
