– “Life Is Like Bread, Don’t Expect it to Butter Itself!”
The law of bread and butter states: “Life is like bread, don’t expect it to butter itself!” What this saying is that we all have a blank canvas in life and although we want things, don’t expect them to happen by themselves. It doesn’t matter if you don’t like bread or don’t like butter or don’t like metaphors, this one IS butter.
Imagine yourself standing in a kitchen with a piece of bread in your hands. You can be holding whatever kind of bread you like. Now also imagine a countertop with a jar or tub or tin of butter perched keenly on top, don’t worry it’s been refrigerated. This is your life!
Say you want some butter on your bread, well, as the saying goes: “don’t expect it to butter itself!” Seriously, it’s a wisecrack but full of commonsense truth. This is your life!
The kitchen is a metaphor for our world, reality, lifetime, universe, whatever scale you want to apply to it. The bread is your current possessions and situation in life. The butter is what you want, your goals, the future, that next step in your life.
If you put it all together what this metaphor tells you is that things aren’t going to happen on their own. You have to get off your butt and get that butter and put it on your own bread. The amazing part is that it is already there! You don’t have to go and search for some butter that doesn’t exist, the butter is already there, just spread it on!
Don’t psyche yourself out; just as real as the bread is there in your hand (it’s a matter of fact), so is the butter there in front of you real. You just have to reach out and take hold of it. Sound too simple, you say? Well, life is not all that complex, it is pretty simple at the end of the day. We, as masters of drama, tend to dress life up as something so complex it cannot be overcome!
Now, reflect on this metaphor and go out and accomplish something today! Put this saying to the test and find that small, simple butter that you would like to apply to your bread and make it a reality. Remember: “Life is like bread, don’t expect it to butter itself!”
